Director Cloud Governance and FinOps Technology

As a Director Delivery – Cloud Governance and FinOps Technology for the American Express Cloud Engineering team will be responsible for managing cloud governance and delivering cloud cost management capabilities using modern cloud technologies to enable efficient adoption of cloud to realize maximum business value. This role primarily focuses on developing broader cloud governace capabilities vision, roadmap partnering with various stakeholders within the company.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent thought leadership, strategic and critical thinking, financial and budgeting experience, ability to communicate to senior leadership, relationship building skills, and the ability to work well under pressure. They will need to have a consistent track record of excellence operating independently and within a hard-working team environment.


This role will also:


  • Build an efficient cloud governance program including application onboarding, IT/IS standards, controls and policies to effectively manage compliance and risk in a hybrid cloud environment
  • Deliver features and capabilities for the Inform, Optimize, and Operate phases of the FinOps lifecycle
  • Define the vision and drive the delivery roadmap for cloud governance product capabilities
  • Partner with Finance, Product Delivery, CTO and other key stakeholder teams to advance FinOps practices
  • Enable cost governance tools to provide visibility into resource utilization and costs
  • Influence cloud catalog roadmap and technology decisions for cost and demand optimization
  • Define and drive KPIs to measure success for cloud goverance in partnership with Technology Risk and Information Security teams
  • Develop best practices for cost optimization across Public and Private Clouds.
  • Evangelize Cloud governane and Cloud FinOps practices among the Technology community





  • 5+ years of experience in Project Management, financial management for large portfolios
  • Experience in cloud cost goverance tools and capabilities
  • Experience in risk management including developing IT/IS controls
  • Strong experience in the implementation of Cloud FinOps framework
  • 3+ years of experience in cloud cost management tools like Cloudability, CloudHealth, CloudCheckr
  • BS in Computer Science or Finance or equivalent experience, MBA a plus
  • Strong experience in the areas of Cloud costs governance, and management
  • Experience in developing cloud cost management stragies, and best practices
  • Experience with Agile methodology to drive software development and delivery
  • Excellent understanding of Public clouds and components such as Infrastructure, Virtualization, Containers, Network, Storage, Tagging tools, monitoring tools, Logging analytic tools, Monitoring (Splunk, etc.)
  • Deeper knowledge on public cloud infrastructure provision, cost optimization and governance, forecasting, and third-party license management


Salary Range: $145,000.00 to $230,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
