Senior Manager, Data Engineering

The Expedia Group Cost Transparency team is on a journey to empower product teams to make data-backed decisions to prioritize cloud cost and become a more cloud cost aware citizen. As part of that journey, we are creating a unified cost platform providing internal cloud cost visibility, governance, and optimization tools in partnership with program, product and finance. Our multi-cloud FinOps platform helps ensure we build a tech optimized travel platform while improving our unit economics.

We are looking for senior data engineering manager to be part of our data and intelligence service group who can help design and build the long-term architecture for the various components of our cost transparency ecosystem, provide technical leadership to a team dedicated to driving technology innovation for enabling faster and smarter decision making. What you’ll do:

• You will lead implementation teams and ensures the successful execution of new ideas or approaches
• Evangelising Cloud, DevOps and FinOps best practices by openly and honestly showcasing cost-conscious technical solutions, reporting techniques and methods in search of simple, elegant and cost-effective business solutions
• You will have broad knowledge of the entire product and in EG’s languages, frameworks, cloud services, toolkits, methodologies enabling you can help with any component, or type of issues
• Engage with stakeholders across engineering teams and C-level executives to help with understanding cost and figuring out cost optimization opportunities
• Implement and configure cost visibility dashboards helping teams in forecasting their cost accurately
• Evaluate historical cloud spend to identify patterns and opportunities for cost reduction or optimization
• You will determine different phase milestones and priorities in collaboration with product management peers
• You will convey the right information to the correct parties to ensure that proposals for improvements are given the proper consideration and technical issues are resolved in a timely manner
• You will remain informed on industry trends. Examine inefficiencies in the existing stack operation and encourage engineers to improve them
• You will bridge the gap in discussions between technology and non-technology personnel. Report on team status faithfully and listen for suggestions to improve
• You will review the skill and expertise requirements to accomplish team goals and identify staffing and talent resources to fill project roles
• You will guide employees and managers in the development of team and individual goals, providing regular and specific feedback, and assessing individual and team performance

Who you are:

• 8+ years software development experience in an enterprise level engineering environment demonstrating increasing levels of technical leadership
• 5+ years’ experience of managing big data engineering experience with excellent understanding of delivering Data and AI projects
• Candidates with FinOps background would be a huge plus
• Outstanding communication and organizational skills – able to translate between technical and business functions, bring forward a vision or opinion that can push the boundaries of innovation
• Experience architecting, developing, and successfully delivering complex, large-scale systems
• Good hands-on big data eco-systems like Spark, Hive, Presto, Kafka, Airflow, NoSQL Datastore, REST API.
• Data-native; can read and write complex SQL in your sleep
• Strong, multi-year experience with at least one BI platform – e.g., Looker, Tableau, Power BI, or Data Studio
• Be comfortable working across countries and time zones on a daily basis
• Ability to lead multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, prioritize decisions and tasks and work in a fast-paced, changing environment
• Relentless passion for delivering technology and experiences that help customers and developers
• Ability to mentor team of mixed experience, some are senior to you and help in their career progression
