Director, Engineering (Cloud | FinOps)

As Director Engineering Cloud, you will be partnering with technology teams across the organization in enabling, building or supporting Cloud solutions by engineering a stellar Cloud Platform. As part of the WBA Cloud organization, you provide engineering leadership and influence the design from an enterprise perspective.

You will work with some of the best engineers, developers and architects and implement systems that scale millions of transactions a day. You will have expertise in various Cloud based app architectures, self healing systems, modern development languages, infrastructure, source control, security, compliance, continuous integration, testing, delivery, business continuity, visibility, and monitoring. You will collaborate with other members of the WBA Tech Organization including Solution Architects, Distinguished Engineers, and product owners.

You will collaborate and mentor technology teams across multiple business units driving the implementation of the cloud strategy. You will dive deep in app architecture and integration to drive advanced design discussions and decisions.

Job Responsibilities

• Directs and oversees the activities of a large, strategically important sector of Cloud engineers responsible for providing desired functionality to assigned content, products or services.
• Manages the development, testing and implementation of Cloud services and applications that meets established specifications. Builds engineering action plans from strategic goals.
• Manage agile teams in a continuous integration environment; builds multiple products on a shared, microservice-based platform; and reliably deliver high quality content on schedule
• Interacts with executive management with regard to development issues and opportunities
• Manages the vendor relationship including determining in scope and out of scope work, working through any interpretation of contract terms and monitoring/reviewing SLA adherence. Performs deep dive research on missed SLAs Partners with the vendor to drive continuous improvement resulting in improved service and/or lower cost.
• Understands long term goal/objectives and makes sound selection of technical solutions and services presented by team
• Responsible for setting on functional and business goals for the group. Anticipates process centric, people centric, and operations centric ideas, issues and opportunities to move the business forward.
• Will develop budget for functional area. Manages budget to plan and is responsible for meeting/delivering against budgetary goals and objectives. Run a lean and effective budget
• Influences individuals within and outside the engineering department. Prepares and presents reports to all levels of leadership and staff.
• Stays abreast of industry leading best practices, participates in internal and external technical forums and helps team to implement innovative solution. Develops and leverages partnerships (and relationships) with internal and external stakeholders to meet business needs.
• Oversees and manages managers. Allocates available resources to meet operating objectives. Ensures the ongoing training and development of direct reports. Develops and mentors staff through onboarding, open communication, training and development opportunities and performance management processes; builds and maintains employee morale and motivation; ensures the team is appropriately staffed with required competencies; fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace.
• Participates in the Development of metrics and scorecards to influence the technology teams on industry best practices for cloud deployments. Makes recommendations regarding the operating plans, then based on prevailing conditions may realign the daily operations of team.
• Maintains organization’s effectiveness and efficiency by defining, delivering, and supporting strategic plans for implementing technologies.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and at least 8 years of experience managing cross-functional and/or matrix teams OR High School/GED and at least 11 years of experience managing cross-functional and/or matrix teams.
• Experience with Cloud, On Prem and SaaS Technologies for large scale application development, modern development such as micro services and CI/CD
• Experience in engineering, software engineering or related field
• Experience establishing & maintaining relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization, in the business community & with vendors.
• Experience with vendor and vendor contract management, including SLA review.
• Experience identifying operational issues and recommending and implementing strategies to resolve problems.
• Experience managing cross-functional and/or matrix teams.
• Experience managing at scale.
• At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
• At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or crossfunctional team leadership.
• Willing to travel up to/at least 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience managing Cloud Native, DevOps/SRE, Hybrid Infra engineering teams
• Experience leading agile delivery teams and implementing continuous improvements
• Experience leading large, highly technical teams in a matrixed organization to achieve common goals
• Knowledge of app & data architectures and cloud native patterns for development, etc.
• Knowledge of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) philosophy, Chaos Engineering, technologies, platforms and tools, SLA management, incident resolution, and automation
• Experience leading collaborative teams to achieve common goals
• Experience in large scale internet companies/technologies, where uptime and continuous availability was core to the business
• Experience presenting technical ideas in business-friendly language to executives to gain approval
• Experience in navigating complex organizations and collaborate to advance vision.
• Experience identifying operational issues and recommending and implementing strategies to resolve problems.
• Experience in managing people and product budget
• Experience applying standards of cloud compliance to application design to achieve reliability
• Knowledge of Networking and cloud technologies, for example Security, Load Balancing, Network routing protocols
• Knowledge of regulations such as PCI, PHI etc.
• Experience leading collaborative teams to achieve common goals
• Experience in big data and drive business value solutions partnering with non technical and technical leaders
• Experience in managing risk and implementing controls to enable a safe and secure operating environment
