FinOps Public Cloud Capacity Planning Analyst

Workday is seeking a FinOps Public Cloud Capacity Planning Analyst who has hands-on experience to handle public cloud costs and improve efficiency within our platforms. This role will partner with software engineering teams, liaison with platform engineering teams, cloud governance, product management, and design operations to complete our cost optimization roadmap.The primary duties will include:
  • Cross-team collaboration to establish a demand plan for public cloud resources needed for each WDn (Workday Region).
  • Create a roadmap of new WDn creation, within each AWS & GCP US Regions and AWS & GCP Europe Regions, given the constraint of max N Compute Instances per each WDn.
  • Work closely with AWS & GCP to provide demand signals for Compute and Database needs by each AWS & GCP Region so that AWS & GCP capacity planning teams can plan their capacity additions.
  • Collaborate with external industry players (public cloud users and FinOps foundation) to adopt best practices.

 

The scope of this team will include Cloud Spend controllership/accountability, Cloud Vendor management, various commercial structuring to get the best price point per usage. This function will have access to near-real-time data to prepare Demand Plan and make intelligent decisions that ultimately result in efficient cloud usage, performance and quality/availability of services.   • Long range planning of demand for Public (AWS, GCP) services
  • Analysis of actuals to budget / forecast variances.
  • Analyze key areas of waste elimination and rightsizing of public cloud resources
  • Extract and analyze large scale data within cloud billing and usage, to support senior engineering and financial partners in decision making
  • Leverage sophisticated analytics to derive actionable insights on cloud spend, enabling informed decision-making and strategic planning that aligns with business cost-efficiency goals.
  • Foster cross-team teamwork, crafting a cohesive work environment that encourages unified strategies, improves communication, and aligns with broader business goals.
  • Build alignment with engineering teams to identify and take action on optimization opportunities
  • Review storage and data transfers practices, emphasizing efficiency, and availability, all of which are essential for flawless business operations.

 

About You

Basic Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in cloud cost management, platform engineering, or related fields.
  • 5+ years of experience with analytical tools like Looker, Tableau and Jupyter Notebooks for data manipulation and visualization.
  • 3+ years of experience of public cloud infrastructure technologies.
  • 2+ years of experience in using tools and practices to supervise and analyze cloud costs, finding opportunities for optimization and efficiency.
  • 2+ years of experience in defining public cloud KPI’s and working with engineering teams to automate reporting of KPIs

 

Other Qualifications:
  • Ability to partner cross-organizationally, develop optimization strategy and drive optimization discussions.
  • Staying up-to-date on current cloud cost trends, technologies, and mitigation strategies, with a focus on hands-on implementation
  • Proven track record to craft and implement innovative solutions that improve financial control and efficiency within the cloud, with experience in agile planning
  • Experience handling major cost-saving projects from inception through post-implementation, as well as getting involved in technical tasks
  • Experience working in an Agile environment
